I’m fascinated by mobile computing…always have been. I’m also lucky enough to work in the mobile content industry as a product manager. While everyone seems to agree that the future of computing (and the web) is in mobile, nobody really knows how it will play out. I created The Mobile Future as a place to capture all my thoughts on the evolution (and revolution) of mobility.
Consider the following data points as originally noted by Tomi Ahonen: There are over 2.7 billion mobile subscribers in the world (data was as of early 2007…we are surely around 3 billion now). That’s 3X the number of personal computers, and 2X the number of television sets. Over a quarter of all internet access is from a mobile device, and twice as many people use text messaging on a phone as use email on the web. Pretty astounding stuff.
In the future, what will these 3 billion people want to do with their mobile devices? What new types of services, products, and business models will emerge? What will the mobile value chain look like in 3 years? The dirty little secret is that NOBODY knows. That’s what makes it so great to be in mobile right now. And these are the questions I want to explore here on The Mobile Future.
Although, I might go off topic every now and then and discuss other important things like Aggie Football
